What is Meridia ®?

Generic Name: sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate

Action:  Appetite suppressant through
norepinephrine serotonin and dopamine reuptake inhibition

Side Effects :  Headaches.   Can cause nervousness, dizziness, dry mouth, and agitation.  Can cause elevated blood pressure. Can develop tolerance to this medication.  This would mean a person would need to take more to achieve the same appetite suppression, but would also mean continued chance for elevated blood pressure. Can also cause impotence and alterations in sex drive.

Pregnancy : No established studies. Not recognized as safe in pregnancy.
